Analysis of distribution characteristics in overweight and obesity of adults in Shijiazhuang City

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To realize the situation of overweight and obesity residents in Shijiazhuang city, and to provide a theoretical basis to reduce various risk factors for chronic diseases. METHODS: Based on the data of the health examination of 1 784 Shijiazhuang adults in 2005, the current situation of obesity and overweight in Shijiazhuang adults was analyzed according to the age, gender, rural and urban types. RESULTS: In the urban-rural distribution, the overweight and obesity rates of urban male non-manual groups were the highest, while obesity rate of women in rural population was the highest; young rural women and middle-aged manual female population had a higher overweight rate than the other groups. In terms of age distribution, male overweight and obesity rates were from the 20-year-old age group starting with age increase, the highest in the 30-34 years of age, then decreased in 30-39 years of age, followed by changes in body weight without apparent regularity; female overweight rates always raised with age increase and declined from the 50-59 age group. Morphological indicators of gender showed significant differences. CONCLUSION: Overweight and obesity mostly occur in middle-aged and old people in Shijiazhuang city; urban males and rural women exhibit higher rates of overweight and obesity; males have increasing morphological indicators, such as waist-hip ratio, compared with females.
